Monterey and what we will paint

Just two hours down the Pacific Coast Highway from San Francisco, Monterey’s world-class aquarium, fascinating history, fresh seafood, rich arts scene, and some of the country’s best wines make this coastal paradise a must-visit destination.  If you’re a John Steinbeck fan, there’s a good chance you’ve heard of Monterey – he grew up in nearby Salinas, and much of his writing was about this area, including the novella Cannery Row. The weather in October: the weather is perfect and it’s more likely to be clear and sunny. The California coast offers a variety of paintable areas to plein air paint from rugged coastal waters to gently rolling grasslands and hills. Around every corner of this gorgeous landscape is a painting ready to be painted.

Carmel by the Sea and what we will paint

Carmel has been a mecca for artists, writers, and musicians since the turn of the last century. Today, more than 100 art studios, galleries, and antique stores represent the works of master artists, both local and from around the world. The Carmel Art Association, a nonprofit founded in 1927 (making it the second oldest art cooperative in the country) features the work of more than 100 professional local artists. There are beautiful beaches and fairytale cottages to paint. You will be inspired by the many local galleries that Carmel has to offer.

Take a look at some Carmel’s artists work:

Kevin Milligan, Milligan does all his paintings on-site. "I don't want to work from a photograph," he says. "All of my paintings, I am going from the third dimension to the second dimension."

Stephen Sanfilippo

Sanfilippo's works are mostly oil paintings of Carmel area landscapes, including vineyards, the coastline, and fields flushed with wildflowers. Some of the paintings have acrylic paint underneath the oils. "I would say it's less about technique and more about light and feeling," Sanfilippo says of his process.
